Tailor Convicted for Stealing Church Funds, Cautioned by Court

A 35-year-old tailor, Moses Vincent, has been convicted for stealing GH₵600 from the Star of the Sea Catholic Church after being captured on the church’s CCTV. Vincent appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court facing multiple charges, including unlawful entry and theft.

Vincent admitted to stealing the money but denied other charges related to unlawful entry and being on premises for unlawful purposes. These additional charges were subsequently withdrawn. The court, presided over by Halimah El-Abdul Baasit, convicted him based on his guilty plea for stealing and remanded him until June 26, 2024.

Upon reappearing in court, Vincent maintained his guilty plea. In light of mitigating factors, including a good Samaritan paying back the stolen amount, the court cautioned Vincent and ordered him to sign a bond to ensure good behavior for the next 12 months.

The case was initiated by a report from Chantel Agbenyo, a security officer at the church, who, along with Thomas Wahab, head of church security, apprehended Vincent after reviewing CCTV footage. The footage revealed Vincent stealing from the church’s offertory box on March 20, 2024, and again in May 2024, when he took an envelope containing GH₵600 from the altar.

Despite the plea from church elders for leniency, Vincent was re-arrested in May after the second theft. Although the stolen money was not recovered, the CCTV footage served as key evidence in the case.
