Teacher-Turned-Poacher Arrested in Mole National Park After 100km Trek

A notorious poacher who traveled over 100 kilometers from Tumu in the Upper West Region to Mole National Park in the Savannah Region has been apprehended by park staff for poaching.

Johah Forkah, a 42-year-old teacher at Kanton Senior High School and native of Sorbelle in the Sissala-West District, was arrested during a poaching expedition. Forkah had taken leave from his school, claiming he needed to attend to personal matters at home. Instead, he accepted an invitation from a friend named C.K. from the Grumbelle community in the Wa-East District to join in poaching activities.

Forkah, along with another accomplice named Lukeman, ventured into Mole National Park on Saturday, June 22, 2024. They set up a poaching camp in the Gbanwelle area and began their illegal hunt. The next day, they successfully killed a warthog. While Lukeman transported the carcass back to their camp, Forkah and C.K. continued hunting without further success.

Returning to their camp after hours of fruitless hunting, Forkah and C.K. encountered park rangers who had discovered their camp and set up an ambush. Despite being commanded to surrender, the poachers attempted to flee. Forkah was eventually apprehended after a pursuit.
