Ghanaian Court Denies Bail to Accused Shooter in Soldier’s Death

The Achimota District Court has denied bail for Benlord Ababio, alias Nana Barima Ababio, a self-proclaimed security operative accused of shooting Lance Corporal Michael Danso over a land dispute. Benlord, reportedly a traditional ruler in Kasoa, is charged with murder and conspiracy, alongside his recently arrested accomplice, Nana Amo Kofi Kwakye. Both men pleaded for bail but were remanded and will reappear in court on May 30, 2024.

Benlord’s defense lawyer, Mr. Nashiru Yussif, argued that his client was not a flight risk and had reliable sureties for bail. Similarly, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Retired) Baffour Appenteng Nyamekye supported Kwakye’s bail application, asserting his client’s innocence. However, the prosecution, led by ASP Lawrence Anane, opposed bail, highlighting the serious nature of the murder charge and potential interference with ongoing police investigations.

The prosecution detailed the incident, stating that on April 30, 2024, Lance Corporal Danso and colleagues were reporting a trespass at Millennium City police station when Benlord allegedly attacked and shot Danso, killing him instantly. Benlord was subsequently disarmed and arrested. The court sided with the prosecution, emphasizing the gravity of the charges and potential risks posed by granting bail.
